Dracology: Fantasy or Reality?

In all of the contradictions, are dragons fact or fantasy, or is the answer lost in time?

As far as any research shows, there is a single "dragon" still in existence; the Komodo Dragon. But what of the dragons of legend and tale? Great fire-breathing wonders who burned the land and collected the treasures of their victims, intelligent flying beasts, great magicians and even illusionists. The welsh have a plausible theory, but it is, as are all theories on dracology, regarded as a myth.

In all reality, it is entirely probable dragons did exist when one broadens the mind and looks at all of the supporting evidence. Honestly, Dragons appeared in most if not all ancient civilizations. I will admit that some of these civilizations might have had some communication between them, we know Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt, and civilizations in the Mediterranean did trade and have contact with each other. On the other hand though, what about the Aztecs and their feathered serpents that flew about? Or the Chinese dragons? The Chinese prided themselves on reclusiveness, going out of the way to stay out of the business of other civilizations, so where did their "myth" on dragons come from? How can so many completely different societies, with separate customs and beliefs come up with so many similar, yet vastly different dragons? There were scaled four-legged dragons with two wings, using breath-weapons including frost, flame, noxious gases, and a variety of other abilities; dragons that resembled snakes with wings made of bird feathers; dragons that looked to be stone carved into living creatures; Chinese dragons with serpentine bodies, four legs, and beard-like whiskers. These are only a few of the multitude of different dragons from ancient times.

On the opposite side of the coin however, is the fictional creature. It almost always resembles a medieval dragon, and the setting is also nearly always in the middle ages. In the event that this is entirely a fictional creation that spread and adapted to it's authors, who could have imagined up such a beast? Is it really all that easy to imagine a fire-breathing, flying, lizard-like mage-beast out of thin air? It doesn't seem likely.

I mean only to inform you on my opinion of why dragons must have existed at some point, perhaps living side by side with humans, perhaps not, we can only use guesswork and hints and clues as to what these amazing beings were like.

Assuming that they were real, one must believe that they had contact with humankind, and that at some point something must have happened to drive the dragons into hiding, extinction, to another world, or into exile. The Welsh believe that there are the remains of the dragon race buried in the center of Britain, waiting for their lair to be reopened so they can roam the earth and control the skies. It is up to you to determine whether you believe that dragons are fact, or fantasy.

The next question we must ask is simple; Where would dragons live in the event that they do exist and are not in coexistence with humans as we speak?  This question can be answered with another question; what kind of dragon are we talking about, or is there only one kind?

Assuming, for the moment, that there is one kind of dragon only, and they do not live among us in the modern age, we can safely guess that they would live in the remotest regions of the planet, away from polution, destruction, and human warfare.  The areas they might inhabit include the Hindu Kush Mountains, the tallest of the great mountains of the world, and the most dangerous of the volcanoes.  They could be hiding in the glaaciers of the poles, or sleeping on the highest clouds.  Perhaps they have burrowed into the center of the largest cliffs, their entrance ways  sealed shut for eternity.  Maybe they are simply living in the depths of the forests, kepping well out of sight from humans and their technology.

Even in assuming there are a thousand different species and subspecies of the draconic family, they could be residing in any of these places, or in fact all of them.  They could well be hiding amongst our friends, decieving us.  Next time you see a rich friend or celebrity, look closely at them...is that a stumb of tail hidden there? What is so enchanting me in this woman's voice?  Those haunting purple eyes that see right into my soul.  Does his skin naturally have that glimmer to it?  Is that a faint hint of scales on the back of her neck?  Keep in mind that dragons are masters at magic and adore attention.  They are tricksters and clowns, and more vain than our pampered kittens.

We never know who it is who is truly correct, with all of the "information" about dragons out there.  I do not pretend to be an expert, nor can anyone.  All I ask is that you fantasy fans and dragon hunterskeep in mind all of the "information" that is given to you, and keep watch for any hint of dragons from any source.  If any of you were to find a dragon or the remains of one, you would be extremely fortunate, and the envy of all the dreamers of the world.
